Bingkai Karya-Ohio musician, Kim Deal releases the debut song under her own name, “Coast,” through 4AD. Premiered by Lauren Laverne on 6 Music radio show, the song is now available worldwide. Before releasing his solo single, Kim was first known as the original bassist and co-vocalist of the band Pixies. Also the frontman of the band The Breeders.
“Coast” was composed in 2020 after she experienced “low levels of self-esteem” while listening to The Grape Whizzers perform Jimmy Buffett’s 1977 hit song “Margaritaville” at her friend Mike Montgomery’s wedding. But the song’s roots date back to 2000, when Kim lived on the island of Nantucket, Massachusetts. This Ohio native, who claims to detest the sun, beaches, and water activities, had an unanticipated flashback during those tough off-seasons.
“Coast” was recorded by Steve Albini at his Electrical Audio studio in Chicago. Lindsay Glover and Breeders alum Mando Lopez provided the rhythm section. Kim’s sister Kelley played guitar and trumpet was performed by Chicago marching band Mucca Pazza.
