The White House called the meeting a “good step forward”. White House Publicist Karine Jean-Pierre said Blinken’s main message was to emphasize the importance of maintaining open channels of communication to reduce risk.
Blinken became the first US secretary of state to meet with a Chinese president since 2018, saying he had raised controversial issues at his meeting, such as Taiwan, a democratic island claimed by Beijing, the South China Sea, North Korea’s missile launches and the war between Russia. and Ukraine.
In a press conference following his two-day visit to Beijing, Blinken said the relationship was destabilizing, and that both sides recognized the need to work to stabilize it. However, progress is difficult and takes time. And they are not the result of one visit, trip and conversation. Blinken hopes that both parties will have better communication and engagement in the future.
Although they have not made any major progress, the two agreed to continue their diplomatic engagement with more visits in the coming weeks and months.
