
Indonesian food has once again stolen the spotlight on the world stage. This time, tekwan, a specialty dish from Palembang, South Sumatra, made it into the TasteAtlas list of the top 15 most popular fish soups. Quoted from the TasteAtlas page, tekwan is in 15th place among the 50 most popular fish soups in the world. The dish received a 3.8 out of 5 stars from the ranking.
Tekwan is a traditional Indonesian fish ball soup. The essential component of the dish is the tekwan fish balls, from which the name of the dish is derived. It is usually made from fish paste, tapioca, and flour, boiled or fried before being added to the soup. The broth of tekwan is usually seafood based such as fish or shrimp.
The dish also features mushrooms, dried lilies, sliced galangal, garlic and spring onions and is served with tekwan. Some tekwan dishes also include vermicelli and other vegetables. This Palembang specialty is also accompanied by traditional Indonesian sambal. It is served on the side, allowing people to adjust the spiciness according to their tastes and preferences.

The origin of tekwan is believed to be from the city of Palembang, located in South Sumatra, from where this delicious soup spread throughout the country. The word ‘tekwan’ comes from the Palembang word ‘berkotek samo kawan‘ which means ‘sitting, chatting with friends’, as it’s a dish best enjoyed together. Tekwan is usually found on the menu of Indonesian restaurants, and is usually served at traditional Indonesian street food stalls.
TasteAtlas also included the top five places to eat the best tekwan. The locations are spread around Indonesia. Starting in Central Jakarta, South Jakarta, to the place where it originated, Palembang.
