The official Twitter account for George Morikawa’s Hajime no Ippo boxing manga announced on Friday that the manga has sold over 100 million copies, coinciding with the publication of the manga’s 138th collected book volume.
The 138th issue’s cover illustration pays homage to the manga’s first volume, which was published in Japan in February 1990. On Wednesday, Shogakukan’s Weekly Shonen Magazine will publish the manga’s commemorative illustration commemorating the 100 million milestone.
Morikawa thanked the manga’s followers for their support, adding that the manga is “halfway through” the plot and asking for their ongoing support. Morikawa debuted the manga 1989, and it remains his lone manga series.
The manga spawned a television anime adaptation in 2000, which was followed by the sequel Hajime no Ippo: New Challenger in 2009 and the sequel Hajime no Ippo Rising in 2013. In 2003, the series spawned the Hajime no Ippo – Champion Road special as well as the Hajime no Ippo – Mashiba vs. Kimura original video animation. Before ceasing business in 2007, Geneon Entertainment published the first television anime season on DVD in North America.
