Indonesian Movies Are Set to Compete in the 2024 Oscars

The Indonesian Oscar Selection Committee of the Indonesian Film Company Association (PPFI) is again sending Indonesian films to compete at the 2024 Oscars. PPFI Chairman Deddy Mizwar hopes that through Indonesia’s participation, Indonesian films will begin to be appreciated by the world.

“Our mission is not only to win Oscars but also to put Indonesian films on the world film map,” Deddy Mizwar said.

The committee consists of 9 people from the film industry, which are Deddy Mizwar, Slamet Rahardjo, Garin Nugroho, Sha Ine Febriyanti, Ilham Bintang, Alim Studio, Cesa David Luckmansyah, Ratna Riantiarno, and Nur Hidayat. They are selected according to their respective abilities.

Their task is to select and determine the Indonesian film that will represent Indonesia in the Best International Feature Film category of the 2024 Oscars. Zairin Zain, Secretary General of PPFI and Chairman of the Oscar Selection Committee explained that the films eligible for selection are those released between December 1, 2022 and October 31, 2023. In addition, the films must pass the censorship of the Film Screening Institute (LSF).

“Another requirement is that the film must have been shown publicly in commercial theaters for at least seven consecutive days,” Zairin Zain explained.

However, it is still unclear which Indonesian films will be nominated by the Indonesian Oscar Selection Committee. Previously, the Indonesian Oscar Selection Committee also sent Indonesian films to the 2023 Oscars, which was “Ngeri-Ngeri Sedap” by director Bene Dion.

“Ngeri-Ngeri Sedap” is the second Indonesian film to win an Oscar in the comedy genre after “Nagabonar” (1986). Unfortunately, “Ngeri-Ngeri Sedap” representing Indonesia was not nominated for the 2023 Oscars in the Best International Feature Film category.
