Electric Cars are Not as Green as You Think

Nowadays, many car companies are creating electric cars because of the high emission produced by fuel cars. Electric cars are believed to cut carbon emissions and considered as green technology. However, electric cars are not as green as you thought, despite the low carbon emission produced by the car itself, there is one main problem with electric cars: battery production.

Electric cars have been a hot topic to fight pollution; however, electric cars production costs more pollution. The main problem with electric cars is the battery. (https://www.disabilityhelpcenter.org) The process of making electric cars’ batteries contributes more carbon emissions, for example, China’s battery factory for electric cars contributes 60% more emissions compared to conventional car production. In addition, an electric car’s battery requires Cobalt and Lithium which contributes more pollution from the mining process.

Lithium, cobalt, and nickel mining requires chemicals and large amounts of water, frequently from locations where water is available, and can cause the poisoning and disposal of toxic waste. Not only that, it takes heat between 800 and 1,000 degrees Celsius to create the materials required for production; this temperature can only be reached effectively by burning fossil fuels, which again increases CO2 emissions.

Furthermore, the lifetime of electric car batteries is short, resulting in more battery production and a huge waste of batteries. The waste of electric car batteries considered electronic waste, and dangerous to the environment was, due to the Lithium in the battery itself. Therefore, recycling electronic waste is important to prevent environmental damage.
