Airline reservations to the United States increased quickly after the White House declared that the country would reopen to all immunized overseas travelers beginning next week, necessitating a welcome though difficult business turnaround.
The long-awaited United States decision to reintroduce international visitors, which goes into effect on Monday, comes after 33 countries were restricted for 18 months during the worst of the coronavirus pandemic, which divided families, hampered business travel, and annoyed tourists.
Air France, United Airlines, and Singapore Airlines are among the major carriers scrambling to meet the unexpected rise in demand, increasing flights, switching larger planes for smaller ones, and redoubling efforts to employ and keep staff.
British Airways recorded a 900 percent increase in searches for flights and vacation packages to key US destinations just following the White House statement, compared to the previous week. The day after the announcement, American Airlines had a 66% increase in flight reservations to the United Kingdom, a 40% increase to Europe, and a 74% increase to Brazil.

The timing for a significant rebound in business travel is still undetermined, which has an impact on airline planning. Airlines have traditionally flown wide-body planes over the Atlantic on busy routes to give comfortable seats for business travelers, and then smaller flights for tourist destinations. However, if business customers are late returning, airlines may elect to schedule more direct flights using newer narrow body jets with longer range.
