Singapore’s Changi Airport, which is ranked first in the world, witnessed passenger volume around pre-pandemic levels last month due to high summer travel demand. According to a Changi Airport Group statement, the airport processed 5.12 million passengers in June, surpassing the five million mark for the first time since January 2020, when the Covid-19 pandemic struck. The statistic, which amounted to 88% of passenger traffic in June 2019, demonstrates that the city state is well on its path to reestablish international links.
According to Lim Ching Kiat, executive vice-president for air hub and cargo growth, Changi has restored more than 80% of its pre-Covid city ties. In the second half of the year, the airport is working to establish further connections to China and Southeast Asia.
The upswing comes during the peak summer vacation season, when travelers are mostly ignoring concerns about inflation and a worldwide economic slump. In the United States, passenger numbers have essentially recovered to pre-pandemic levels as people delve into their savings for travel.
In the second quarter, the Southeast Asian hub’s top markets were Australia, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand. Passenger travel to and from Northeast Asia increased to 75% of pre-pandemic levels in June, up from around 50% in January. The Singapore Formula One Grand Prix begins in September, and a series of sold-out high-profile concerts with artists such as Taylor Swift and Coldplay take place early next year.
