Along with the threat of climate change, the application of eco-friendly and sustainable buildings is important. One of the implementations is from the airport since all of its operational activities are very likely to contribute to climate change.
There are 4 aspects that must be considered regarding sustainable airport development, namely environment, community, economy, and operation. These 4 aspects are very important for the airport to have a sustainable concept. Besides that, every airport is expected to implement the eco-airport concept.
The development and preservation of the airport’s environment has also been regulated in Government Regulation (Peraturan Pemerintah) Number 32 of 2021 concerning the Implementation of the Aviation Sector.
In implementing sustainable airport with eco-airport approach, there are some programs that must be applied such as decarbonization (net zero emissions), physically sustainable airport design, airport development without destroying the nature and biodiversity of the local area, able to improve the health of employees, the surrounding community, and users, and able to play more roles in the community (community engagement) by providing new job opportunities for the surrounding community.

The great thing is that Indonesia already has an airport with a sustainable concept, namely the Banyuwangi International Airport. The airport has plants on the terminal roof, water conservation, the use of sunroofs for natural lighting during the day, and a design that optimizes the natural air system so that it does not require air conditioner (AC).
