Did you know that many habits can damage your eyes daily? You may even be abusing your eyes to do something, whether intentionally or not.

Such an unhealthy lifestyle can cause many problems. However, the first effects are only visible to our eyes. Here are some eye-damaging habits that you may not realize you’re doing:

  1. Staring at the screen for too long 

When using a computer, humans blink more frequently than the recommended rate of once every four seconds (about once every eight to ten seconds). Although the difference may seem insignificant, blinking keeps our eyes lubricated. Eye strain is caused by dry eye symptoms caused by insufficient eye lubrication. Limit screen time and wear blue ray protection glasses when staring at screens. Irregular sleep cycles and persistent dry eye problems are two major problems caused by prolonged screen time. 

  1. Smoking

Apart from damaging your eyes, smoking increases your risk of AMD, an eye disease that causes blurred vision.

  1. Too many eye drops

While they may provide temporary relief from dry eyes, overuse can eventually irritate the eyes. Over-the-counter eye drops will only make your eyes less red. The thing to remember is that eye drops won’t help your eye health. Experts recommend using eye drops temporarily only.

  1. Not sleeping well

According to NDTV, lack of sleep can lead to a variety of problems, such as a weakened immune system, depression, and weight gain. In addition, lack of sleep can lead to eye damage, with symptoms such as eye twitching, dry eyes, blurred vision, and pain.

  1. Irregular diet

Poor eating habits can deprive our eyes of the nutrients they need. Some fruits and vegetables, especially those rich in vitamins C and E, zinc, and omega-3 fatty acids, are essential for maintaining optimal eye health. Include as many citrus fruits, vegetable oils, nuts, seeds, green vegetables, and seafood in your diet as possible. Also, avoid foods that contain a lot of salt, as they can dehydrate the body and affect the eyes.
