Monopoly is getting its own live-action movie, following the success of Barbie and The Super Mario Bros. which proves that strong IP-based material can be an effective formula for success at the box office stage.
Monopoly is one of the most famous board games in the world. The aim of the game is to dominate all the tiles on the board through buying, renting and exchanging properties in a simplified economic system.
This game was first created by Elizabeth Magie in 1903 under the name “The Landlord’s Game,” which aims to teach economic theory, especially regarding inequality in the distribution of wealth. In 1935, Charles Darrow adapted the game and changed it to Monopoly which is more like the version we know today.
Earlier this week, Variety revealed that Lionsgate has officially acquired Entertainment One, also known as eOne from Hasbro, and has also made several deals with the toy company to create new content, including the development of a live-action Monopoly film.
Previously reported, Lionsgate has acquired Entertainment One’s (eOne), which is Hasbro’s television and film division with a value of 500 million US dollars. Its development involved Kevin Hart, Tim Story, and Ridley Scott.

With this acquisition, Monopoly fans can finally look forward to seeing a film adaptation of Monopoly become a reality after a long delay. Currently, there are no directors or actors attached to the Monopoly project yet. Hopefully Lionsgate can provide a creative touch in this film.
