According to a new study published in the American Journal of Lifestyle Medicine, individuals showed promise for type 2 diabetes remission after a lifestyle intervention that included adopting a whole-food, plant-predominant diet.
The researchers studied the health records of 59 type 2 diabetes patients from a cardiac wellness program who maintained a whole-food, plant-based dietary pattern between 2007 and 2021. The patients ranged in age from 41 to 89 years old, with an average age of 71.5 years. These patients showed significant improvements in blood glucose management, and 37% of those in the study attained full diabetic remission.
This study shows that high-fiber, low-fat plant-based diets can help individuals who are currently receiving standard-of-care treatment achieve remission from [type 2 diabetes mellitus]. The trial was unique in that it did not require calorie restriction or fasting and had a main goal of diabetes remission rather than improvement, according to Dr. Caroline Messer, an endocrinologist at Northwell Lenox Hill Hospital who was not involved in this study.
