The 2023 United Nations Global Climate Action Awards are here to honor the inspiring climate action efforts of young people. These awards, in their twelfth year, continue to recognize groundbreaking initiatives that combat climate change. This year’s focus is on energy transition and resilient nature, highlighting the critical role young leaders play in creating a sustainable future.
Over the past decade, these awards have applauded transformative climate projects, including the world’s greenest football club, Lebanon’s all-women solar squad, and Sweden’s ‘climate-positive’ restaurant chain. These initiatives have served as inspiring examples of impactful climate action.
In 2023, the UN Global Climate Action Awards are placing a special emphasis on young leaders under 35, acknowledging their vital contributions. Two categories are dedicated to their efforts:
- Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency: Young leaders are recognized for driving community-centered renewable energy and energy efficiency projects, fostering fairness through education and public awareness.
- Nature and Resilience: This category celebrates young individuals or groups from indigenous and local communities for their work in nature-based solutions and ecosystem-based techniques, promoting resilience and equity within their communities.
These awards showcase the innovative spirit of young climate leaders, setting an example for others to follow. Simon Stiell, Executive Secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, highlights their leadership role in addressing the climate crisis.
The 2023 UN Global Climate Action Awards are made possible through collaboration with organizations such as the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). This collaboration ensures that the awards recognize impactful climate actions and unite the world in combating climate change.
