Bingkai Karya – Canadian singer-songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Chris LaRocca is set to mark a new chapter in his artistic journey with the announcement of his upcoming EP, dog years, arriving later this year via Red Bull Records/Wonderchild. Known for his genre-blending sound and emotional depth, LaRocca kicks off this new phase with the release of the lead single, “ladybug.”
“ladybug” introduces fans to a more intimate and reflective version of LaRocca, blending retro-inspired tones with modern indie pop influences. The song offers a vibrant yet nostalgic feel, signifying a shift toward a brighter and more daring musical style. Lyrically, it’s a heartfelt ode to the power of unexpected love. “When a ladybug lands on you, it’s supposed to be a sign of good luck,” LaRocca explains. “This is how I felt when my partner came into my life. ‘ladybug’ is about the beauty of those surprises and the places love can take you.”
In the lead-up to dog years, LaRocca spent time reexamining the works of legendary artists such as The Band, The Byrds, and MJ Lenderman, drawing inspiration from their timeless storytelling and sonic richness. While dog years promises to carry the spirit of ‘70s rock and rootsy americana, LaRocca continues to weave his signature alt-pop elements throughout, creating something uniquely his own. Though the sound may differ from his previous release, i cried my eyes out, fans can expect the same raw emotion and sincerity that have become the hallmarks of his music.
With “ladybug” laying the foundation for what’s to come, LaRocca is poised to deliver a powerful new body of work that honors the past while fearlessly pushing forward. As anticipation builds for dog years, listeners are invited to experience the warmth, vulnerability, and energy of an artist unafraid to evolve—both in sound and in soul.
About Chris LaRocca
In a previous life, Chris LaRocca was a fixture in Toronto’s DIY scene, playing sweaty basements around North America with his post-hardcore band. As that chapter of his sound slowly faded into the rearview, LaRocca transitioned from the stage to the studio, establishing himself as a dynamic producer and sought-after collaborator for top-shelf names like Kali Uchis, Bryson Tiller, Russ, and Stray Kids.
He soon caught the attention of GRAMMY-nominated, JUNO Award-winning producer, WondaGurl, joining her Wonderchild roster in partnership with Red Bull Records. His first full-length, ‘i cried my eyes out’, featured the song “linger”, which he brought to the screen in a heart-wrenchingly beautiful short film that won a Cannes Lion, among other accolades.
While he’d come a long way from his DIY days, there was a part of LaRocca yearning for the music that reflected his authentic identity. “I started listening to a lot of The Band, Steely Dan, The Byrds – they were all such big influences, and I was looking for parallels between their world and mine”.
He found in a year of self-discovery, the music that was most true to his character wasn’t the chaotic, brain-melting noise of his early punk years. Instead, it was deeply rooted in introspective songwriting with notes of untamed exploration and refined energy. Going into 2024, he relocated from Toronto to the Canadian wilderness to follow the Americana, rootsy sounds that were calling to him. Stay tuned for a new era of Chris LaRocca.
