Under the Rambutan Tree: Sezairi Reflects on Ego, Heartbreak, and Self-Love in “Kan Ku Nantikan”

Bingkai Karya – Following the release of his January single “Kata,” Sezairi continues his musical journey with “Kan Ku Nantikan,” out on June 20, 2025. This new single once again sees Sezairi exploring themes of love, this time from a more grounded and honest perspective. Unlike his previous romantic narratives, “Kan Ku Nantikan” embraces the reality that love is not always sweet, and relationships often fall short of our expectations.

“It’s incredibly hard to compromise in a relationship, or to meet someone who truly aligns with you. I think it all comes back to ego,” Sezairi explains about the inspiration behind the song. “If you’re not aware of your ego, the relationship won’t last. It just won’t work.”

While the song touches on the heavier parts of love and partnership, Sezairi delivers it through a refreshing lens, not with bitterness, blame, or denial, but through acceptance. He resists the urge to dramatize heartbreak or play the victim, instead choosing to confront reality without ego and without distorting the truth of the situation.

“When you’re in that kind of situation, the one thing you must do is love yourself first, rather than cling to someone uncertain. Stop blaming yourself, start caring for yourself, and accept what’s happened. It may hurt, but you have to go through that pain to recognize the values in a relationship. Maybe you’ll come back to it someday. Maybe not,” he reflects.

The idea for “Kan Ku Nantikan” came to Sezairi spontaneously while in the bathroom. The entire song was later developed in collaboration with Teddy Adhitya, his creative partner for his upcoming album. What makes the song feel especially personal is the storytelling element that places the love story beneath a rambutan tree, a location that becomes a symbol of shared memories and quiet heartbreak.

The lyric “Kan ku nantikan wajahmu di bawah pohon rambutan tempat kita sering bertemu” (“I’ll wait for your face beneath the rambutan tree where we used to meet”) sounds simple on the surface but is loaded with layered metaphor and emotion. It’s this natural storytelling that gives the song a heartfelt intimacy.

Sezairi further explains that the rambutan fruit, with its signature sweet and sour taste, serves as a metaphor for the complex ‘flavor’ of love. The use of Bahasa Indonesia also reflects his strong connection to his cultural roots. Though born and raised in Singapore, Sezairi continues to express himself organically in Indonesian, reaffirming his artistic identity.

Musically, the track features a thick, dominant bassline and a tempo that mimics a ticking clock, symbolizing how time often becomes the unspoken tension in relationships hanging by a thread. All instruments on the track were played by Sezairi himself, except for the keyboard.“Kan Ku Nantikan” will be included in Sezairi’s upcoming album, set for release in the second half of 2025. The single is available to stream on all digital platforms starting June 20, 2025.
