Bingkai Karya – After the record-breaking success of Jumbo, Southeast Asia’s most-watched animated film, Visinema officially announces its most ambitious and challenging project to date “PERANG JAWA” (Java War)
This epic historical drama will tell the story of Prince Diponegoro’s resistance against colonial powers, a pivotal moment in Indonesian and Southeast Asian history. Produced by Visinema Pictures and directed by Angga Dwimas Sasongko, Founder and CEO of Visinema, the film is set for production in 2027 and will also be executive produced by Gita Wirjawan.
“Java War is a bold new challenge for us — an epic war film rooted in Javanese soil, created with cinematic scale and intensity on par with global historical blockbusters,” said Angga Dwimas Sasongko. “We aim to build a powerful world, tell the story through stunning visuals, and offer audiences an emotional, immersive experience, all from an Indonesian perspective. This aligns with our vision of becoming a game-changer in the national film landscape.”
The idea to bring this story to the big screen was first proposed by Gita Wirjawan, Host and Executive Producer of the popular Endgame series, who will serve as executive producer on Java War. “Diponegoro didn’t fight for a throne. He fought for dignity, faith, cultural legacy, and sovereignty,” said Gita. “To me, this is a deeply human and monumental story. With Java War, we want to reintroduce the values of Diponegoro’s struggle through the cinematic medium and we hope this epic can resonate not only in Indonesia, but around the world.”
Java War marks a new creative milestone for Visinema following the phenomenal success of Jumbo, a major moment in Southeast Asian animation history. The upcoming film will be produced by Taufan Adryan, with a screenplay by Citra Award-winning writer Ifan Ismail, in collaboration with renowned historian Peter Carey, author of The Power of Prophecy: Prince Dipanagara and the End of an Old Order in Java, 1785–1855.
“This war was one of the most defining anti-colonial movements in Southeast Asian history, yet it has never been portrayed in cinema on a scale that does it justice,” said Peter Carey, who will serve as the film’s historical consultant. “Through film, we can revive the spirit of Prince Diponegoro, a bold leader with high ideals and deep spirituality, a general and an early symbol of anti-colonial consciousness. His story remains profoundly relevant for today’s generation, not just in Indonesia, but globally.”
The announcement coincides with the 200th anniversary of the start of the Java War, which began on July 20, 1825, when the colonial government built a road across Prince Diponegoro’s ancestral land, triggering one of the bloodiest and most significant wars in Southeast Asian history.
Visinema has established itself as a bold and innovative studio. With Jumbo, it made history as the most-watched Indonesian film of all time. Prior to that, Visinema brought fresh genres to Indonesian cinema with the heist hit Mencuri Raden Saleh and the action-packed 13 Bom di Jakarta, both directed by Angga Sasongko.
