Bingkai Karya – Luna Shadows enters a new chapter with her latest single, “gutspill,” a vibrant release that brings her emotions to the forefront through a blend of crunchy Midwest emo-inspired guitars, dreamy electronic production, and layered vocals. The single marks a shift toward a more lighthearted and emotive era while retaining the atmospheric qualities that have defined her sound.
Co-written and co-produced with Chris Freeman of Hot Mulligan, “gutspill” draws from the emotional immediacy and pop-punk energy of early-2000s alternative music, filtered through Shadows’ distinctly atmospheric approach. The result is a track rooted in modern nostalgia while giving listeners a fresh perspective on the alternative influences that have shaped her musical identity.
At the heart of “gutspill” is the feeling of having emotions that are becoming impossible to contain. Shadows describes the song as being about the fear that feelings might suddenly spill out, whether they come from an unspoken crush or an overwhelming emotion that refuses to disappear. Rather than suppressing those feelings, the song embraces the idea of expressing them openly and creatively.
“‘gutspill’ is a song about when you fear your feelings are about to fall out like confetti,” Shadows says. “You can try to hold them in or push them down, but ultimately, it’s more fun to let them out.”
The accompanying music video continues that playful direction, featuring Freeman on guitar and drawing heavily from the visual language of early-2000s pop-punk. The video also represents Shadows’ first traditional band-style performance video, offering a departure from her typically more serious visual work. She directed, produced, production designed, and edited the visual herself.
A classically trained pianist, Shadows began writing songs at eight years old before attending LaGuardia High School as a vocal major and eventually moving to California. Over the past decade, she has established her own space within the alternative-pop landscape, writing and producing from her bedroom in Los Angeles. Her music has accumulated more than 60 million streams, with press support from Billboard, NYLON, W Magazine, PAPER, Wonderland Magazine, and LADYGUNN. She has also worked as a songwriter, producer, and engineer for other artists, as well as composing and producing for video games.
With “gutspill,” Luna Shadows brings her lifelong connection to alternative music further into focus, embracing a brighter and more playful side of her artistry without losing its emotional depth.
