Bingkai Karya – For years, Rex Orange County built his music largely on his own, writing, producing, and playing multiple roles throughout the creative process. In 2024, that solitary approach began to change as he opened himself to new friendships and collaborators. Now, in 2026, Rex is set to release ‘Dream Fatigue’, a 12-track album that reflects a more collaborative and expansive chapter of his artistry.
The album marks a significant evolution from the process that defined much of Rex’s earlier work. Rather than creating primarily in isolation, ‘Dream Fatigue’ took shape across trips to New York, Toronto, Rome, Egypt, Ethiopia, and Los Angeles, with many songs beginning on guitar rather than inside a traditional studio environment. His growing creative circle brought together Daniel Caesar, Mustafa, Devonté Hynes, and Brendan Yates of Turnstile, with production by Dylan Wiggins and additional contributions from Taylor Skye of Jockstrap.
That collaborative process also introduced a new discipline to Rex’s songwriting. Working alongside artists he admired pushed him to finish songs rather than leave them as unfinished demos. He describes the experience as one that encouraged everyone in the group to raise their creative standards, particularly as he became increasingly focused on the quality of his lyrics.
Conceptually, ‘Dream Fatigue’ moves away from direct autobiography. Rex developed a central character who adopts different personas in an attempt to win over a girl he loves. Songs including “Hannah Montana,” “Iron Man,” and “Elvis” reflect this idea, while the album title represents a character who becomes tired of repeatedly transforming himself in pursuit of a dream.
Musically, the album combines classic songwriting, gentle melodies, curious hooks, and distinctive production. “Elvis” features Brendan Yates on drums and vocals, while “Indecision (feat. Daniel Caesar)” builds around layered harmonies and soulful arrangements. Across its 12 tracks, Rex maintains an intimate songwriting approach, much of it rooted in the simplicity of working through songs on guitar.
With ‘Dream Fatigue’, Rex Orange County is also embracing a less pressured way of experiencing music. Looking ahead, he hopes to focus on travel and live performance, bringing the music into intimate settings and recreating the feeling of how the album was made: on the move, with little more than himself and a guitar.
