Argentina Wins the 2022 World Cup, Defeating France

Argentina’s onslaught was successful, about halfway through the first half. France forward Ousmane Dembélé tripped Argentine forward Angel Di Mara in the box, earning a penalty kick.  Argentina defeated France to win the 2022 World Cup in Lusail, Qatar, 3-3 (4-2 on penalties) after a thrilling game that ended in a penalty shootout.

Argentina had a 2-0 lead into halftime of the game courtesy to goals from Angel Di Maria and the iconic Lionel Messi, who participated in his final World Cup match today. Messi became the first player in FIFA World Cup history to score in each of the tournament’s 5 rounds with a penalty kick at the 23-minute mark.

As the game entered the second half, Argentina attempted to maintain their lead by slowing down their play. However, France quickly fought to a stalemate thanks to two goals from Kylian Mbappé, the 23-year-old top player. Mbappé scored both points within two minutes of each other, exciting French fans, including Emmanuel Macron.

Lionel Messi can now officially refer to himself as a World Cup champion after defeating France in a 3-3 (4-2) penalty kick shootout in what was likely his final World Cup game. Both Argentina and France were competing for their third World Cup today; Argentina won in 1978 and 1986, while France had won it twice, in 1998 and 2018.

On Sunday, December 18, musicians including Ricky Martin, Kid Cudi, Daddy Yankee, Niall Horan, and many others shared their excitement for the dramatic match at Lusail Stadium, in which Argentina defeated France on penalties.
