BINUS University Launches Initiative Project to Empower Labuan Bajo’s SMEs and Drive Local Economic Growth

Bingkai Karya-In order to strengthen the role of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) as the foundation of local economies, BINUS University Malang has launched an initiative project to develop the premium tourist destination of Labuan Bajo. Running from August 11 to 14, 2024, this project aims to boost local economic growth by focusing on empowering SMEs in the region.

Labuan Bajo, a premier tourist destination in Indonesia, has significant potential for further growth with support for local SMEs. To this end, BINUS University has dispatched a team of experts from various fields to provide the necessary guidance and training for local SME operators. The team is led by Frederik Masri Gasa (Head of the Communication Study Program), Etsa Astridya Setiyati (Head of the Entrepreneurship Business Creation Study Program), Victor Adiluhung Abednego (Head of the Visual Communication Design Study Program), and Febby Candra Pratama (Business Incubator Section Head).

Working alongside the Manggarai Barat Regency government, particularly Ney Asmon, Head of the Office of Labor, Transmigration, Cooperatives, and SMEs, the BINUS University team is focused on identifying and developing strategies to help SMEs become more competitive and globally relevant. “We believe this collaboration will have a significant impact on the development of SMEs in Labuan Bajo, which will in turn strengthen the local economy. We hope this project will serve as a stepping stone for sustainable SME growth in Labuan Bajo, turning it not only into a tourist destination but also a robust economic hub,” said Frederik Masri Gasa, Head of the Communication Study Program and Project Leader for the Labuan Bajo Premium Tourism Destination Development Initiative.

This project is also the result of a strong partnership between BINUS University and the Manggarai Barat Regency government, marked by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding. The full support from Yayasan Bina Nusantara has made this project possible, aligning with the vision of fostering and empowering society to build and serve the nation.Dr. Robertus Tang Herman SE, MM, Director of BINUS Malang Campus, added, “SMEs play a crucial role in building a strong economic foundation in tourist areas like Labuan Bajo. By providing the right support and training, we believe local SMEs can reach their full potential. This collaboration between academia and government highlights the importance of synergy in driving the local economy.” Through this project, BINUS University aims to make a tangible contribution to the development of SMEs in Labuan Bajo and play a role in creating a more sustainable local economy.
