Bingkai Karya – In commemoration of Earth Day, observed annually on April 22, Grand Mercure Malang Mirama collaborated with Bumi Baik and Gunung Pithing Mangrove Conservation to organize a mangrove planting initiative along the coastal area of Tamban Beach, Tambakrejo Village, Malang Regency.

The initiative, titled “Planting Mangroves, Passing on Kindness for the Future,” aims to strengthen the natural coastal defenses of South Malang against abrasion while raising public awareness about the importance of brackish ecosystems for environmental sustainability. Tamban Beach was selected due to its strategic location, which is highly vulnerable to coastal erosion.

Mangroves play a crucial role in carbon sequestration, absorbing carbon emissions far more effectively than terrestrial forests. In addition, they act as natural wave breakers that protect nearby settlements and provide essential habitats for marine life such as fish, crabs, and other species that support the livelihoods of local fishermen.

A total of 60 mangrove seedlings were planted at Tamban Beach, involving approximately 25 participants from Grand Mercure Malang Mirama, Bumi Baik, and the Gunung Pithing Mangrove Conservation group. The event began with opening remarks, followed by a symbolic signing of the collaboration agreement and the handover of seedlings from Grand Mercure Malang Mirama to Gunung Pithing Mangrove Conservation before proceeding to the planting site.

Sugito Adhi, Cluster General Manager of Grand Mercure Malang Mirama & Mercure Surabaya Grand Mirama, stated that this program marks the second collaborative environmental initiative between Grand Mercure Malang Mirama and Bumi Baik.

“On the occasion of Earth Day 2026, Grand Mercure Malang Mirama aims to synergize and contribute to environmental preservation efforts, one of which is through this mangrove planting activity. This initiative represents our commitment to protecting and preserving coastal areas in the Greater Malang region,” said Sugito Adhi.

The activity, which ran from 8:00 AM until midday, not only focused on planting but also included a brief educational session on proper seedling care to ensure a high survival rate.

Edy Sulaksono, a representative of Gunung Pithing Mangrove Conservation, also expressed appreciation for Grand Mercure Malang Mirama’s initiative and tangible contribution to environmental action.

“Mangroves are unsung heroes of marine ecosystems. Beyond their exceptional ability to absorb carbon, their roots provide a habitat for underwater life. Today’s action is a concrete step toward restoring ecological balance, which may have long been overlooked. We highly appreciate Grand Mercure Malang Mirama for supporting this environmental movement. This initiative also contributes to the expansion of mangrove areas, which currently cover approximately 22 hectares and continue to grow with support from partners like Grand Mercure Malang Mirama,” said Edy Sulaksono.
