Bingkai Karya – In a recent press conference, the COP28 president and prominent figure in the oil industry, Sultan Al Jaber, addressed a controversy sparked by a Guardian report that suggested he dismissed the scientific imperative to phase out fossil fuels. The incident occurred during an exchange with a reporter from the Sydney Morning Herald, where Al Jaber asserted that he had been misrepresented and took the opportunity to provide a passionate defense of his stance on climate change.
Expressing admiration for former Irish president Mary Robinson, Al Jaber sought to clarify his comments that seemingly contradicted the urgent need to reduce reliance on fossil fuels. He highlighted the honor of participating in a discussion on climate and gender at Robinson’s invitation, emphasizing his respect for her.
The oil chief, an engineer by background, emphasized his commitment to science and passionately defended his belief in climate science: “Let’s just clarify where I stand on the science… I honestly think there is some confusion out there and misrepresentation.” Al Jaber attributed his career progression to his engineering background and underscored the importance of incorporating “business and economic skills.”
Addressing the core issue of fossil fuel reduction, Al Jaber advocated for an orderly, fair, just, and responsible phase-down and phase-out process. He acknowledged the necessity of transitioning away from fossil fuels but stressed the importance of a thoughtful and strategic approach.
Expressing surprise and disappointment, Al Jaber accused media outlets of consistently attempting to undermine his message, especially regarding his stance on phasing out fossil fuels. He asserted, “Allow me to say that I am quite surprised at the constant attempt to undermine this message.”
The controversy surrounding Al Jaber’s comments reflects the broader challenges and tensions surrounding the transition away from fossil fuels. As the COP28 president, his statements are under heightened scrutiny, with critics and advocates closely examining the alignment of his words with the global imperative to address climate change. The incident highlights the ongoing complexities and debates within the climate change discourse, emphasizing the need for clear communication and unity in the pursuit of sustainable solutions.
