Bed rotting is the activity of staying in bed for a certain amount of time. Not for sleep, but to do passive activities as self-care and is popular among Generation Z or Gen Z who may feel bored with social engagement activities. Experts agree that it is important to indulge in self-care to manage stress and boost energy.

In small doses, bed rotting can calm the body and help relieve stress and fatigue, especially for those who work long hours and are physically or mentally demanding. Lying in bed is known as a way to relax, so people are able to do it without feeling guilty. (Valium)

Although bed rotting can be beneficial for some people in the short term, it can cause concern if it lasts more than 1-2 days. Assistant professor of clinical psychiatry at the same university, Ryan Sultan, says if bed rotting becomes a habit then it can be a sign of depression or other mental health issues. It is important to do bed rotting as healthily and safely as possible. Try to spend your downtime doing activities that prove enjoyable such as reading, meditating, journaling, or light yoga. This is better than doing anything else that may ultimately increase anxiety or dissatisfaction. Also, set a time limit for that to prevent oversleeping.

While it is important to note that bed rotting can provide temporary relief, it should not become a daily habit. If it becomes a habit or if it sees signs of depression, it is imperative to seek professional help.
