
Poetry is a form of literary work that is presented with a series of beautiful and imaginative words that describe the feelings of the author. Uniquely, poetry day is celebrated twice in Indonesia, namely Indonesian Poetry Day (HPI) on July 26 and National Poetry Day (HPN) on April 28.
Even though both may seem the same, the commemoration purpose is different. The Indonesian Poetry Day or Hari Puisi Indonesia (HPI) is the commemoration of the birth of Chairil Anwar, one of the poet legends in Indonesia. Chairil was born on July 26, 1922.Â
The history of July 26 being commemorated as Indonesian Poetry Day was declared based on the agreement of the Formulation Team. The reason why Chairil Anwar is chosen as the figure, is because many consider him to be a major milestone in Indonesia’s modern poetry tradition.
The declaration of the Indonesia Poetry Day was the culmination of a series of Indonesian Poets Meeting (PPI) I events held at Anjungan Idrus Tintin Pekanbaru, Riau, on November 22, 2012. After the meeting, Indonesian Poetry Day is to be commemorated on July 26 on a large scale every year.

Meanwhile, National Poetry Day is celebrated every April 28 to commemorate the death of Chairil Anwar. As Chairil left this world on April 28, 1949. This commemoration is a form of appreciation for his services and contributions to the world of Indonesian literature.
Chairil Anwar is famous as a poet who cannot be separated from modern Indonesian poetry. His figure became a pioneer of the 45th Generation in Indonesian Literature. Chairil Anwar was born on July 26, 1922 in Medan, North Sumatra. During the six and a half years from 1942-1949, Charil Anwar had produced 71 original poems, two adapted poems, 10 translated poems, six original prose, and four translated prose. Chairil Anwar died on April 28, 1949 due to lung disease.
