President Jokowi met Elon Musk as the CEO of Tesla’s Motors on Saturday on the sidelines of his work visit in the United States. This meeting was a follow up to the previous meeting by the Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment of Indonesia, Luhut Binsar Panjaitan.
The purpose of this meeting is to discuss the cooperation with Indonesia regarding the supply and processing of nickel as a raw material for battery cells based on a good and sustainable environment, social and governance (ESG). Indonesia has been trying for years to secure a deal with Tesla about this cooperation.
Joko Widodo invited Elon Musk to come to Indonesia coincided with Indonesia which will be the host of the Group of 20 big economies in November at Bali. Elon Musk said that hopefully he will come to Indonesia at that time.
Actually, it will be a really good opportunity for both sides if this cooperation is successfully approved. Because Indonesia has the world’s biggest nickel reserves and also Indonesia has a lot of potential. Besides that, it will create lots of new jobs for Indonesia’s society.
