Laufey Unveils Fiery Single “Tough Luck” and Announces Bold New Album ‘A Matter of Time’

Bingkai Karya – GRAMMY®-winning Icelandic-Chinese artist, composer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Laufey has announced her highly anticipated third studio album, A Matter Of Time, set for release on August 22 via Vingolf Recordings / AWAL. Alongside this announcement, she also shares a brand new single, “Tough Luck”, which is now available for streaming, accompanied by a lyric video.

“‘Tough Luck’ is a fiery song about love gone wrong. I wanted to reveal an angrier side of myself, a side that this unfortunate relationship brought out in me,” Laufey explains.

Last month, she teased the album’s release with the track “Silver Lining”, performed live with Gustavo Dudamel and the LA Philharmonic at Coachella, and again during her headline set at the New Orleans Jazz Fest.

On A Matter of Time, Laufey solidifies her signature sound, rooted in her love of classical and jazz, yet untethered by convention.

“I’m constantly thinking about how to preserve and pay homage to classical and jazz music. But for this album, I just let my heart wander,” says Laufey.

To bring her vision to life, she teamed up with long-time collaborator Spencer Stewart and GRAMMY®-winning producer Aaron Dessner (Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran). This new sonic freedom allows Laufey to explore a fuller emotional spectrum, delving into vulnerability, frustration, and real love, all through her sophisticated yet playful lens.

“People expect this polished image of me, romantic music, dreamy outfits. But this time, I wanted to face the messier parts of myself head-on,” she reflects.

Each new project for Laufey is a fresh page. Following the introspective themes of Everything I Know About Love (2022) and the GRAMMY®-winning Bewitched (2023), A Matter of Time draws deeper into self-awareness, heartbreak, and emotional complexity, all delivered through lush orchestration, jazz textures, and Laufey’s signature honeyed vocals.
