Hari Kebangkitan Nasional, or National Resurgence Day, is an important observance in Indonesia. It is celebrated on May 20th each year to commemorate the awakening of national consciousness and the spirit of unity among Indonesians in their struggle for independence.
The history of National Resurgence Day is closely tied to the nationalist movement and the struggle for independence in Indonesia.
- Budi Utomo
On May 20, 1908, the Budi Utomo organization was founded in Bandung, West Java. Budi Utomo, meaning “Noble Endeavor,” was the first modern nationalist organization in Indonesia. It aimed to promote education, culture, and unity among the Indonesian people.
- Struggle for Independence
Over the following years, the nationalist movement grew stronger, with various organizations working towards the goal of independence. The movement gained momentum in the 1920s and 1930s, culminating in the formation of the Indonesian National Party (Partai Nasional Indonesia) in 1927.
- National Awakening
Budi Utomo marked the beginning of the national awakening in Indonesia, as it inspired other nationalist organizations to form across the archipelago. These organizations played a crucial role in raising awareness about national identity, advocating for political rights, and demanding independence.
- Declaration of Independence
On August 17, 1945, Indonesia finally declared its independence from Dutch colonial rule, marking a significant turning point in the nation’s history. The struggle for independence, which was driven by the nationalist movement, had achieved its goal.
Today, Hari Kebangkitan Nasional serves as a reminder of Indonesia’s history, the struggle for independence, and the importance of national unity and identity. It is a day to honor the contributions of the nationalist movement and reflect on the progress and challenges faced by the nation.
On this day, various events and activities take place across the country, including flag-raising ceremonies, parades, cultural performances, exhibitions, discussions, and competitions that highlight the spirit of patriotism and the significance of national resurgence.
