Ngeri Ngeri Sedap, the Only ASEAN Film to Screen at Beijing Festival

Ngeri Ngeri Sedap, Indonesian drama comedy film set in the Batak tribe, became the only ASEAN film to be screened at the 2023 Beijing International Film Festival (BJIFF). The movie, also called Missing Home, managed to snatch the hearts of millions of overseas viewers with its heartfelt and funny story.

Ngeri Ngeri Sedap tells us the story of parents’ longing for their children who have migrated to other cities. Mak Domu and her husband want their three children to come home. However, the three children were reluctant to return home due to their busy schedules. As a last resort, Mak Domu and her husband pretended to be divorced, in order to make their three children return to their hometown in Lake Toba.

The movie is starring some of Indonesia biggest artist such as Arswendy Bening Swara, Tika Panggabean, Boris Bokir, Gita Bhebhita, Indra Jegel, Lolox, Indah Permatasari and Abdurrahman Arsyad. When it first aired in Indonesian theaters, Ngeri Ngeri Sedap managed to enter the box office by bagging up to 2,886,121 viewers after about two months of airing.

The film also won several awards, ranging from the Indonesian Journalist Film Festival, Bandung Film Festival, Indonesian Film Festival, Tempo Film Festival, Maya Cup, Indonesian Movie Actors Award, to being nominated as a representative of Indonesia at the 95th Academy Awards in Los Angeles in the International Feature Film category, but still not included in the criteria.
