Plant-based milk becomes all the rage as people are concerned about sustainability, health, etc. However, a study presented at the annual meeting of the American Society for Nutrition found that not all plant-based milk options are fortified to meet cow’s milk nutrient levels.
The research team analyzed 233 plant-based milk products from 23 manufacturers. The result showed only 28 products have protein, vitamin D, and calcium content equal to or higher than cow’s milk.

Additionally, the study found that 170 of 233 alternative milk options were fortified with calcium and vitamin D, equivalent to cow’s milk. Some oat-based, soy-based, and almond milk alternatives also contained these nutrients. Most plant-based milk products have saturated fat levels similar to skim milk, but are not recommended as sufficient fiber sources.
The lead study author and a dietician Abigail Johnson acknowledges that obtaining nutrients from other sources is easy, and cow’s milk is not perfect. However, many consumers believe plant-based milk is a complete substitute for cow’s milk. To ensure accurate nutritional content, consumers should read labels on products, as they vary greatly.
