Romy of The xx Soars to New Heights with Debut Solo Album “Mid Air”

Romy of The xx has released her highly anticipated debut solo album, “Mid Air.” The album celebrates themes of love, sorrow, relationships, identity, and sexuality. It also pays tribute to the queer clubs that have been a source of community and connection for her. It blends classic club music with songwriting to create a unique fusion of euphoria, escape, sadness, and melancholy.

Collaborating with producer Fred again.. and her bandmate Jamie xx on the latest single “Enjoy Your Life,” Romy explores moments of self-discovery and the transition from sadness to euphoria in this solo project. The album includes tracks like “Strong,” “Loveher,” and “The Sea,” combining emotional depth with danceable beats.

“Mid Air” was conceived during the lockdown, emphasizing Romy’s desire to create music that could fit into the club scene. The album draws inspiration from 2000s pop dance and aims to unite people on the dance floor, much like the songs that inspired Romy in queer clubs.

The album’s personal perspective includes Romy using female pronouns in her lyrics, openly embracing her own sexuality, and contributing to queer representation in mainstream music. She collaborated with her wife, Vic Lentaigne, on the videos for the first two singles, “Strong” and “Enjoy Your Life,” both dealing with difficult times and healing.

“Mid Air” ultimately conveys a message of optimism and togetherness, offering a sense of escape from the challenges of the world and celebrating unique moments that can only be found on the dance floor. It’s a reflection of Romy’s journey from sorrow to euphoria and her love for the power of music to connect people.
