SAÈ’s “Kurang Apa”: A Song About Emotional Turmoil in Relationships

Bingkai KaryaSAÈ, a rising Indonesian music group, has released their latest single, “Kurang Apa”, which translates to “What’s Lacking?”. This song is more than just a piece of music; it’s an emotional journey that explores the feelings of someone who is on the verge of giving up on their relationship.

Koko Iryawansyah, the band’s guitarist and songwriter, shares the story behind the song:

“In ‘Kurang Apa’, SAÈ delves into the theme of someone’s insecurity and fear of not being good enough for their partner. The song serves as a call to be more sensitive to your partner’s feelings and to muster the courage to rebuild a broken relationship.”

For Koko, “Kurang Apa” is a medium for the band to convey a positive message to all couples: to always be sensitive to each other’s feelings, avoid making your partner feel down, and support each other.

Stefanus Adiwibowo, SAÈ’s vocalist, adds that relationships are not always about love and sweetness:

“Relationships are not just about love and all things nice. Sometimes, we have to accept that there will be disappointments, conflicts, and other challenges. Ultimately, these are the things that can make someone feel like they’re not good enough for their partner.”

“Kurang Apa” was written by Koko Iryawansyah with assistance from Yovie Widianto, who also served as the song’s producer. Yovie Widianto himself mengaku menyukai karya ini sehingga ia ingin terjun langsung dalam proses produksinya.

According to Yovie Widianto, SAÈ has groovy music with a very unique beat. They also have an 80s music touch with an R&B feel.

“This is a pop composition with a touch of R&B, but it has its own unique characteristics in terms of the lyrics, melody, and harmony. This gives them the opportunity to penetrate the Indonesian music industry with a wider fan base. Moreover, their individual characteristics make me confident that SAÈ can produce quality work. That’s also what made me interested in supporting and working with SAÈ,” Yovie Widianto shares.

The song has a pop genre, with a touching melody and evocative lyrics. The production process itself was quite unique, done during the pandemic a few years ago. Despite being physically separated, the band members still managed to produce quality work by sending each other material virtually.

This first single from SAÈ is available to listen to since Friday (03/01) on all your favorite digital streaming platforms. The single itself was released along with a music video produced by FIBES Creative and directed by Eliza Iskandar.

“Kurang Apa” is a powerful song that captures the complexities of relationships. It’s a reminder to always be mindful of our partner’s feelings and to never take them for granted.
