Stadium 974:The First Detachable Stadium in the World

FIFA World Cup 2022 had several unique things that can be found during those 5-years grandeur events. Aside from being the first Arab Country to host the World cup, Qatar also became the first country to have a detachable stadium in the world with Stadium 974.

Stadium 974, formerly known as Ras Abu Aboud Stadium, is located in the waterfront area of Ras Abu Aboud, 10 km from Doha. It was designed by Fenwick Iribarren Architect from Spain. Its name is derived from the material building that incorporated 974 shipping containers and also acts as a homage to Qatar’s international dial code (+974).

There are some distinct aspects of the stadion except the fact that it could be disassembled, such as it has different usage of each container based on its colors: Blue container acted as a place to buy food and snacks, yellow container acted as toilet, prayer rooms in the black container, silver room provided a VIP room and green container used as a medical assistant or emergency rooms. Also, it didn’t have any air conditioner; therefore, it is only used for evening matches.

The main idea of this construction was to avoid a “white elephant” which is an underused or abandoned venue after the tournament finishes. Qatar envisioned the Sustainability factor as the primary focus and point with this stadium.

Aside from reducing the amount of waste produced during stadium construction, it also had 40% less water usage compared to conventional stadiums.

Global Sustainable Assessment System gave the stadium five-star rating, in which Qatar hoped that would become a prime example and legacy from them to any other country that will host the FIFA World Cup in the future.

They also put the stadium as A* category in build classification and construction management grading. In the future, the World Cup is expected to bring a more sustainable legacy and staging a carbon-neutral tournament.
