
Today, February 13, is World Radio Day. As one of the most popular communications in the world, Radio has massive listeners and listeners even with the rise of smartphones and social media that already reach a significant user in the world. Radio still accompanies us in our daily activities such as driving, working, or even house cleaning. But why is it celebrated?
World Radio Day was first established in Spain in 2010, and the idea was supported by every broadcasting association in the world. In 2011, UNESCO General Conference officially established February 13 as World Radio Day, UNESCO chose the date as a remembrance of the day for United Nations Radio in 1946.

The establishment of World Radio Day is to improve the awareness of everyone and the media about the important role of radio. It also pushes everyone to increase and build access to information via radio, while at the same time, it will broaden the network and collaborations between broadcasting institutions around the world. Finally, on January 14, 2013, the United Nations General Assembly Meeting approved the UNESCO decree for the celebrations of World Radio Day.
The theme of the celebrations changes every year. For 2023, UNESCO carries the ‘Radio and Peace’ theme. The hope for radio to become a media that can prevent conflict, while also acting as a media to keep the world peace, as currently there are several major conflicts and wars that revolve around several countries.
