Bingkai Karya –  TheOvertunes continue their journey toward their third album with their second single, “Makhluk Cahaya”. After releasing their first single “Sampai Kapan?” last May, brothers Mikha Angelo, Reuben Nathaniel, and Mada Emmanuelle returned with an introspective song born from their self-reflections. Only this time, they did not process their innermost thoughts alone; they invited Nadin Amizah to co-write and sing along with them.

The essence of “Makhluk Cahaya” is not just a story, but a life principle held by each of its writers. “Our beliefs align with this song, it’s something that has always been on our minds and kept on trying to live through all our lives,” Mikha shared. This message is emphasized repeatedly in the chorus, which goes: “Beribu kali terjatuh, kembali terbangun, aku kembali percaya kita makhluk cahaya, mulai dari hati, sampai seluruh bumi, aku kembali percaya kita makhluk cahaya.”

Becoming a light and sharing kindness through life is a simple message. “But it’s actually not easy to apply to our own lives, and fully understanding and living it requires its own level of maturity,” Mada said. This is coupled with the current state of the world, where it feels like many people are losing hope. “I truly wish that the song doesn’t feel like empty optimism, but instead helps people find genuine hope,” Reuben added.

“Makhluk Cahaya” was not a song with a quick writing process. Expressing reflections that involve life principles proved to be quite challenging. “It feels like at this age, we are tested more to no longer be naive and to realize just how hard it is to hold onto these principles,” Mikha noted. However, the song eventually found its way through five writers who shared the same feelings despite their different perspectives. That is the story Nadin brings to the table, being a fellow human being who is also trying to bring light to others.

Aside from lyrics that feel like the outline of a short story, the arrangement choices for “Makhluk Cahaya” also support the minor details that complete its narrative arc. The song begins with the protagonist’s imagination, accompanied only by a lonely guitar: “Seandainya aku punya hati yang tak terbatas, ku mau merangkul seisi bumi.” As the protagonist finds the light, their hope, the arrangement gradually builds and becomes more vibrant. Percussions that beats along our hearts, along with a choir collectively declaring, “kita makhluk cahaya,” breathes life into every message written in the song.

Then, the song transitions into an arrangement that sounds distant, as if supporting the feeling of someone reflecting back on their inner child. That is where Nadin sings softly: “Walau aku kecil, tanganku mampu mendekap seisi bumi.” This perhaps portrays a scene of making peace with oneself, moving from fear to a state full of hope. This contrast can also be felt at the end of the song, which repeats the reflection from the opening verse. But this time, instead of diminishing oneself by saying, “Namun aku hanya manusia,” it is filled with new hope by declaring, “Karena aku manusia.”

Collectively, TheOvertunes feel that “Makhluk Cahaya” is a song that truly represents who they are as musicians. “I hope when people think of TheOvertunes, they remember the message of this song,” Mikha said. It is not just meant to be sung, but to be genuinely lived.

“I hope we can spread love and care to one another more than ever before, and be there for those in need,” Mada said. According to TheOvertunes, this message might be exactly what the world needs right now. “Take hope and love more seriously, and stop being cynical for a moment. In fact, hope and love just might be the answer,” Reuben explained.
