Bingkai Karya – Nine years is no short time for an electronic music group like Weird Genius, consisting of Reza Oktovian, Eka Gustiwana, and Roy Leonard. Throughout their journey, the group has undergone significant growth, from lineup changes to shifts in their musical style. With the addition of Roy Leonard at the end of 2023, Weird Genius released Catalyst, an ambitious project that earned them an AMI Award in 2024, following the success of Lathi, which also won an AMI Award in 2020.
After a year-long break without any original releases in 2024, the decision was far from accidental. Instead, Weird Genius took this time to refine their identity as Indonesia’s leading electronic group—performing on hundreds of stages, conducting numerous workshop sessions, and engaging deeply with their fans. Now, 2025 marks a new beginning for Weird Genius, with a more mature and refined sound.
This year of reflection has led to a subtle shift in Weird Genius’ musical direction while maintaining the pop elementsthat have always been integral to their songwriting. From the start, Weird Genius has never separated the hype of the dancefloor from the easy-listening pop vibe in their tracks.
“Desire” tells the story of deep obsession, inspired by a real-life experience of one of the members. As with previous Weird Genius songs, listeners are encouraged to interpret it in their own way. The track features fast tempos, subtle hyper-techno influences, speed house four-on-the-floor beats, vocal stutters, and soaring lead drops, inviting listeners to immerse themselves in a hallucinatory atmosphere—eyes closed, smiling. The arrangement is not overly complex, but simplicity has become an essential element in their music as they mature as a group.
“Desire” marks the beginning of Weird Genius’ contributions to the music industry in 2025, paving the way for upcoming singles and an EP currently in the works. Weird Genius firmly believes that Indonesia’s electronic music scene needs fresh perspectives, and through this song, they encourage other electronic musicians to embrace their unique sound—regardless of current trends.
