Leading up to the release, Zara has actively engaged her audience, sharing audio snippets on short-form platforms and launching her IG broadcast, which has already garnered 17,000 members.
Following the success of her previous album Venus, which featured hits such as “Can’t Tame Her” and “On My Love”—both of which secured Top 5 airplay in key markets like the UK and Germany—Zara now returns with her new single. The song, titled “Pretty Ugly,” dropped at local midnights on April 25, alongside its official music video. Zara had hinted at this release by updating her IG profile picture with the phrase “too ugly for a profile picture ❤” as an Easter egg about the creative direction, which draws inspiration from meme culture and early 2000s nostalgia. She also launched a pre-save and broadcast channel, which has already amassed over 8,000 members.
“Pretty Ugly” evokes the feel of Y2K-era hits like “Hollaback Girl,” blending elements of “forest nymph” and “bimbo baddie” aesthetics. This concept will be further explored through memes on Zara’s broadcast channel over the next month, as well as subtly referenced in the official music video.
