6,000 Yogyakarta Residents to Move to Nusantara Capital City to Support Food Security

More than 6,000 residents of the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY) are set to move on a transmigration journey to the Capital City of the Nusantara (IKN), as part of a government initiative to improve welfare and enhance food security. The transmigration program aims to leverage the competence in agriculture possessed by the DIY community, enabling them to become successful transmigrants and actively contribute to the development of IKN.

The program not only presents an opportunity to address food security concerns but also highlights the government’s efforts to incorporate non-agricultural sectors like crafts and services into the transmigration scheme to attract the younger generation. Elly Supriyanti, Head Division of Job Protection and Placement in DIY emphasized the program’s relevance in enhancing the welfare of DIY residents.

As the transmigration takes place, the DIY community pledges to participate actively in the development of IKN, ensuring its success. This partnership between the two regions is crucial for fostering progress and prosperity. Sigit Mustofa Nurudin, Secretary of the Directorate General of Transmigration Area Development and Development of the Ministry of Villages, acknowledges the potential impact of the large number of transmigration areas in IKN on food security.

By incorporating a millennial transmigration approach, the government aims to diversify opportunities for transmigrants beyond traditional agricultural lands and plantations. This inclusive strategy encompasses crafts and services, providing a broader scope for economic growth and development. The government hopes that this will encourage more young individuals to join the transmigration program, thereby ensuring its long-term sustainability.

Bantul Regent Abdul Halim Muslih echoes the government’s commitment to ensuring the success of the transmigration program. To support the transmigrants and enable them to lead prosperous lives, the Bantul Regency will provide essential facilities in the designated transmigration areas. Furthermore, to prepare the local human resources for the transmigration program, the Job Training Center (BLK) will provide relevant training, aligning the skills of transmigrants with the current demands of the world.
