According to Li Huiqin, a tourism expert at the China University of Geosciences, China’s tourist business is on the mend this year. During the May Day holiday, there will be a continual “travel frenzy.” According to data from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the country recorded approximately 1.22 billion domestic tourist trips in the first quarter of 2023, an increase of 46.5% year on year. Domestic tourism revenue climbed by 69.5 percent year on year.
According to the most recent data from China’s Civil Aviation Administration, flight bookings for the forthcoming May Day vacation have already surpassed 6 million, which is about similar to the level recorded during the same holiday in 2019. During the holiday, the administration predicted that the total number of air passenger trips nationally will exceed 9 million.
Local tourism agencies are also developing region-specific strategies to boost the rising travel demand. Making full use of local cultural resources is a popular technique. In Beijing, for example, traditional art forms and intangible cultural heritage are major tourist attractions. During the holiday, 1,170 art shows have been arranged at 147 venues throughout the city.
Looking ahead, market watchers predict that 2023 will be a year when culture and tourism mix more deeply, and that the country’s tourism sector will have a tremendous resurgence. According to a recent China Tourism Academy research, the number of domestic tourist trips would reach around 4.55 billion, a 73 percent increase year on year. The overall number of inbound and outbound visitor trips will exceed 90 million, more than doubling from the previous year.
