Napoli Triumph Serie A Title For First Time In 33 Years

Napoli took home the Serie A title for the first time since 1990 after their 1-1 tie with Udinese. Victor Osimhen scored a penalty kick in the 52nd minute to save a tie and the championship for the Italian team after they had fallen behind to a goal from Udinese’s Sandi Lovric in the 13th minute.

Since Roma won the Serie A championship in 2001, Luciano Spalletti’s Napoli team is the first team other than Juventus, Inter Milan, and AC Milan to accomplish this feat. This season, Napoli has been in first place in Serie A after starting the year with a 15-game clean streak that saw them not drop a single game until January.

The victory makes Napoli the Serie A champions for the third time in their history. During Diego Maradona’s historic tenures at the club in 1986–87 and 1989–90, they won their previous championships.

With fireworks, singing, and flares, fans around the city celebrated their teams’ historic triumph, turning the entire city into one big street celebration. Since Roma won the league in 2001, a team from a region south of Italy’s traditional football capitals of Milan and Turin has never before won the competition.
