The world’s oceans are now having many problems, from plastic pollution, biodiversity-loss, to climate change. Those problems deteriorate our ocean until the UN declares “Ocean Emergency”. The world is in a crisis and all the governments need to be serious on this damage.
The plan to save the ocean has been existing for so long, but many countries hinder the agreement to protect the world’s oceans, according to Guterres, the Secretary General of the UN. Many country members of the UN are condemned by the experts for failing to grant the agreement to protect the ocean from exploitation. From 64% of the high seas, only 1.2% are protected.
Actually, how bad is the condition? According to the World Meteorological Organization, in 2021, there was a rise of sea level and global warming raised to its peak. Not only that, marine pollution killed the sea species, decreasing its number, including the species of sharks and stingrays which decreased more that 70% during recent 50 years.
About 80% of the world’s waste was thrown to the sea without being processed. It can be said that there are approximately 8 million tons of plastic dumped in the sea every year. The condition is indeed that awful; therefore, the UN expects more fast and serious action in responding to this massive damage, for the sake of our future.
