Communication students of University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) reported to create podcast content as a Public Speaking course assignment to fulfill the end of semester assessment. The assignment is highly required for all fourth semester communication students in the 2022-2023 academic year. The conduction of this assignment regarding the end of semester assessment is based on the podcast phenomenon that grows endlessly.
Throughout the years, technology has been thriving in a very unexpected way. Technology development doesn’t only affect people’s lifestyle and way of living, but also affects people’s preferences in entertainment channels, such as podcasts, videos, and many more.
This following assignment was held by the Public Speaking class’ lecturer in charge of class B, G, H, I, J, Tanti Nur Dwiyanti. Apparently, this assignment is the form of collaboration between Bingkai Karya and Komunikita.
“From the beginning of the lecture, students have been told that public speaking practice activities are not all about speaking without any context, but they must be able to make descriptions or scripts as material regarding the practice or content,” Tanti explains. “Public speaking activities are not only about performing individually, but performing by team to achieve the main goal of the activity. Therefore there are two assessments that we give, individual assignments and group assignments.”

In this high-priority assignment, the students must form groups consisting of 2 people for each group. These groups of students have to create content descriptions, podcasts covers, and produce audio content that lasts a maximum of 10 minutes. The students are free to choose what kind of phenomenon of University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) they want to use as the podcast topic.
This new policy of assignment is expected to continue in the long term with variative contents and expected to spread the awareness of University of Muhammadiyah as a top university through the creativity of the students.
