Bingkai Karya-Japanese band THREE1989, whose three members were born in 1989 released their second single of 2024, “Last Tape.” The song was produced by Gunma Prefecture-based beatmaker yuhei miura. Whose obsession for lo-fi hip-hop and chillhop music has led to releases on overseas labels.
Released during Japan’s rainy season, the song captures the moment of parting with a lover. Which trying to burn that final scene into memory forever. The song’s simple structure is unlike any of their previous material, with piano and beats that accentuate the catchy vocal melody.
To match this new departure from their usual sound, the mastering and Dolby Atmos processing for the song were handled at big turtle STUDIOS. It is the facility run by origami PRODUCTIONS. Which is home to pre-debut THREE1989 cohorts Ovall, Kan Sano and Nenashi.
THREE1989 consists of three members who were each born in 1989. Each of the three members write the music and lyrics together. Uniquely blending 1970s, ’80s and ’90s sounds such as New Jack Swing, funk, disco and R&B. Interwoven with dance music to create a sound that is both modern and what the band call “New Nostalgic”.
The band is set apart by vocalist Shohei’s incredible singing technique and stunning voice. DJ Datch’s play style that uses scratching and samplers to go beyond the usual framework of a DJ. And keyboardist Shimo’s impressive multi-instrumental abilities.
The band have already held headline shows at prestigious venues in Japan such as Liquidroom in Tokyo and appeared at multiple Japanese music festivals, as well as performing overseas in countries such as Taiwan, South Korea and Spain. They have also worked with several artists from around the world, releasing musical collaborations with Ink Waruntorn (Thailand), Midas Hutch (The Netherlands) and LINION (Taiwan).
