The Pon Your Tone rapper, who released his fourth single in a year, credits his creativity to his 6-month sojourn in Ubud, Bali. “I was inspired to write this song while living in Ubud.” Matter Mos said he encountered many hippies who believed in therapeutic spiritualism or this ‘talisman’ As the topic suggests, this song features verses with dual meanings.” I wanted to compose an unusual hip-hop tune.” He stated that he inserted multiple meanings to each verse to help listeners interpret them.
Matter Mos’s latest track, “Talisman,” features humorous lyrics with deep connotations, compared to his previous three singles that explored self-discovery, environment, and politics. “In this song, you can see me being carefree and freely exploring unusual lyrics that never crossed my mind”. The musician said, “If you listen long enough, you can tell this song is deep.” He then explained that ‘no fret macam Rhoma’ might be ‘no worries’ or Rhoma Irama’s fretless guitar. These ‘no fret’ lyrics also reference Rhoma’s top single ‘Santai’.
Matter Mos uses double entendre lyrics to produce a motivational and easy-to-listen hip hop song. The phrase ‘talisman on my fist’ convey the idea that healing and motivation are within reach. He remarked, “Your future is in your hands, that is the core message of this song.”
The Journey
Over two years were spent on this tune, from sampling, beat-making, songwriting, recording, mixing, and mastering. Matter Mos discovered the fundamental beat on which this song was built in 2022. The music expanded with more samples and instruments, giving it a ‘Middle Eastern’ feel. The vibrant sitar, tambourine, and drums enhance his flow. After finishing this song, I submitted it to Mardial to mix and improve. He detailed how he worked with Greybox to develop the music and create “Talisman” as it stands now.
This song will be on Matter Mos’ new album next year. The rapper also combined elements from his four tracks this year to create a cohesive concept for his future album. On November 8, 2024, Matter Mos and Pon Your Tone will release the “Talisman” music video. The song is also available on streaming services!
