Produced by Thomas Powers of The Naked and Famous (Towa’s main collaborator on the LP), “Boomerang” emerged while the Los Angeles-based musician struggled with the frequent back-and-forth of her relationship with her girlfriend, who lives in New York City. Towa stated that this song was inspired by a lovely but brief five-day vacation with her girlfriend. This song was co-written by Towa Bird, Powers, and Alisa Xayalith (also of The Naked and Famous).

“Boomerang” begins with a searing riff before gaining feverish speed thanks to fuzzed-out guitar tones, pulse-pounding rhythms, and crazily soaring melodies. Towa’s voice expresses both dreamy fragility and genuine irritation as the song progresses, reaching a soulful intensity at the chorus (“Leave me like a boomerang/I know you’re coming back”). The outcome is an instant hit of pure emotional catharsis, equal parts heart-on-sleeve confession and sublimely furious anthem.

“Boomerang,” the latest single from Towa’s upcoming debut album, follows the April release of “Wild Heart,” which received praise from NYLON (who called the tune “exuberant”) and Guitar World (who called it “an infectious indie-pop romp”). Her breakthrough track was quickly followed by a gritty yet fantasy video in which Towa performs an explosive guitar solo in a glittering, Elvis-esque jumpsuit, which landed her on Dazed’s definitive list of creatives impacting young culture.
